The World of Bridgeport

"Bridgeport" is a name that carries a strong sense of irony. Firstly, it refers to an island surrounded by dense white fog. The people of Bridgeport also attempt to venture out and establish connections with those outside the island, but none of the sailors who set out ever return. Ships disappear into the mist, so the people of  Bridgeport tie ropes to the boats, allowing the ropes to trail long behind them. The thick ropes are never fully used, as one day, silently and without warning, they snap in the water...

Sailing出海

"No one knew what else was on the ship besides rice wine. The laborers who loaded the cargo had no energy to think about what was inside the bags. They watched the ship, completed just a month ago, swaying on the water. They saw those destined to disappear, walking onto the deck one by one. Their only thoughts were to finish the task quickly and disembark. The crowd behind the village chief was not allowed to show grief. The sound of crying was buried behind flowers and grass. The weeping inside the houses before and after the departure clung subtly to the chicken dung. Suddenly, a woman was seen crying over a dead chicken, and no one found it strange. Going out to sea used to be a hopeful thing. People felt there was no need for pain. The men who went out to sea were mostly voluntary and had aspirations to leave from a young age. The notion that women on board defiled the ship only emerged later."

——Spider Silk Bridgeport by Lilia LUO(駱力言)

Thawing開河

"Langai reached out to dig into that sparkling structure, so easily inserting her fingers inside, but once grasped, it was difficult to pull out. This was the best spell for preserving the bodies and belongings of ancestors after their death. Spellcraft, that was how the village elders defined this river. It had been kept still for centuries until it was roughly cut open, all because of a massive mermaid sculpture. It floated on the surface of the village chief's grandfather's dream waters at night. After waking from the dream, the old man rowed his boat to this river valley, dragging his old legs to climb up. At the break of dawn, he arrived in front of this lifeless river, where he saw the sculpture sinking to the riverbed.

Since then, thawing the river became a choice."

The Giant Forest

"The trust of the people of Bridgeport in the land is a life-and-death covenant. When a woman is about to give birth, her family carries her into the giant wood forest. Climbing over several tree roots, they go as far as possible to avoid the trees with mounds and try to stay close to their kin. As the woman reaches the edge of the open space in the forest, a grand ritual called "Pulling Tail" (Menstruation) begins. It involves a massive clot of blood, pulsating tendons filled with breath. It sprawls on the grass, dense and sprawling, the scorching vitality burning the soil and grass, their screams muffled by steam, simmering and swelling. Blood and amniotic fluid flow over the new shoots in front of the ancestral tree mounds, quenching their thirst and nourishing their hunger, paying respect to the ancestors. When the child starts to crawl, they will be brought to this open space and allowed to crawl freely. Whichever tree the child crawls to play beside will become their burial mound after they pass away. Even if they crawl onto the head of the ancestors, there is no other choice; what needs to be dug will be dug, what needs to be buried will be buried. The child is blessed, and the ancestors have company. The mounds need to be dug by oneself, and the elderly of Bridgeport willingly do so, eager to return to their homeland. They return to the trees they marked in their childhood and dig the pit alone."

Upside-down Island Mountain

He looked up, and the top of Upside-down Island Mountain was shrouded in clouds and mist. The summit was smooth, making it difficult to reach the mountain peak. The reason it is called Upside-down Island Mountain is because it is said that the first and only person to climb up there saw another inverted mountain peak emerging from the vast expanse of clouds. He claimed that above this sky, there is another land turned upside down. Many people didn't believe him, but they still went along with the name change, calling it "Upside-down Island Mountain" instead of "Upside-down Mountain."
——Spider Silk Bridgeport by Lilia LUO(駱力言)

The highest of the three peaks in Bridgeport is shrouded in mist and rain, with a mysteriously smooth surface at its summit that is inaccessible to ordinary people.

Hairpin Mountain簪山

"The rabbit could be seen falling onto the rocks below, devoid of any signs of life. Beneath it was a deep cliff, just like its namesake. The Hairpin Mountain stood tall, piercing through the sea and Bridge Harbor, separating the lofty expanse of the ocean from the beautiful yet lowly farmland. Along the edge of the cliff, there were traces of stone steps, but they had long been abandoned and eroded, making their outlines indistinct."

——Spider Silk Bridgeport by Lilia LUO(駱力言)

Temple Guarding守廟

The people guarding the temple, entrusted by the village chief, carry a glass bottle dug out from the soil. The bottle is filled with yellowed paper and miscellaneous items left by their ancestors. The temple guardians visit the homes of the pioneers. They enter the embrace of those families and extract a sparkling old ornament from the bottle. Look, this is a newly discovered treasure brought back by our ancestors from the outside. They take out a piece of paper, and look, it is filled with drawings of the land, the land beyond.

"The children are brave, brave pioneers.Don't worry about the children not having a place, their names will be listed in the temple of their ancestors."

——Spider Silk Bridgeport by Lilia LUO(駱力言)

Mermaid Mother Goddess

"The previous generation of village chief, due to illness, passed on the responsibility to the current village chief at a young age. When the current village chief was not even ten years old, the ancestral well was discovered, and many exquisite ornaments, along with numerous glass bottles, were unearthed from the first batch of ancestral relics. Among them, there was a necklace depicting a half-human, half-fish creature that was excavated long ago. The village chief has been staring at it for a long time, with its small breasts, wavy hair, and round, plump tail. The elders outside the door chirped, saying that the necklace and the jewelry came from the outside world, worn by women or men from outside. Upon examining the paper pages inside the glass bottle, the elders learned that this creature is called a mermaid, a combination of human and fish, an entity from the outside world. The connection between the jewelry and the information inside the glass bottle suggests that they may belong to the same ship or the same family. There are many records of navigation and the outside world, and there are corresponding patterns on the jewelry."

The statue of the mermaid goddess was later excavated, causing great panic among the village chief's family, who had never had a physical object to worship. They had always listened to their father's words, and no one had told them that they should also listen to their mother's words.

Empty Altar

"He placed the collected white silk on the altar. The silk was sticky with mucus, and as he held it in his hands, it felt chilling. Behind the altar, he stared at the red paper and wall charred black, and in front, there were meat and fruits arranged. The candlestick stood tall in the middle, while he twisted the wet stickiness in his hands, standing on a high stool.
He looked at the empty, ashen center of the candle flame and put the white silk inside. After the workers helped him down, he stood on the ground, feeling the solid earth supporting him from beneath."
——Spider Silk Bridgeport by Lilia LUO (駱力言)

Planting Sheep種羊

"Fusqing's friend lost his beloved lamb, a female sheep, and he buried it beneath the fruit tree behind his house. When he raised a new male sheep to offer as a sacrifice, he threw the cut-off strips of the sheep's testicles behind the house. Later, when he came to clean up after slaughtering the sheep, he saw the patch of land where the female sheep was buried crack open, its inhales and exhales resembling a moist mouth. The cold organ was about to be submerged in the depths of the soil, surrounded by roots and sand. He reached out and peeled away the layers of soil, only to find that the female sheep had decomposed in its limbs and head, while its white belly remained pristine and untouched. With a snap, the organ was sucked back into the soil. The friend wanted to continue digging and unearth the carcass of the female sheep, but the soil kept swallowing it, leaving him helplessly watching as the sheep was buried by the earth.

Several years later, on an early morning, he brought Fushu to the fruit tree behind the house to pick and eat fruits. They saw a small lamb partially buried in the soil, weakly gasping for breath. That very day, the fruit tree withered."

Vermin

" On vermins and Spider Silk. The creatures referred to as "vermins" in the text are clearly spiders that we are familiar with, except they are larger and more ferocious, carrying symbolic significance. They are not simply black or white monsters, and they are clearly not native creatures of Bridgeport. In the text, Mangyan sees them falling alongside the rain, indicating that they come from the sky. This extends to Bridgeport's highest mountain, Upside-down Island Mountain, a place where no one has climbed to the summit. The only person who claims to have done so may be telling lies. However, multiple details in the text reflect that Bridgeport's sky seems to truly hold that piece of land. The items brought by the magic worms include guns, cell phones, fake genitals, and screws. This signifies that the so-called "Sky City" within Bridgeport's sky encompasses sex, violence, and mechanical domination. When compared to the people of the "Sky City," objectively speaking, the people of Bridgeport are relatively happier because the isolation and backwardness of Bridgeport have resulted in its monotonous pastoral nature. However, the people of Bridgeport still retain their primal desires, constrained by various traditions that prevent them from fully expressing themselves. On the other hand, the people of the Sky City have unleashed sex and violence to a greater extent. In the text, it is not explicitly stated how the people of the Sky City live or what the consequences are. However, the people of Bridgeport are awed by the power of the magic worms, and even the village chief uses spider silk as an object of worship, revealing the subconscious longing of the people of Bridgeport for the Sky City. Of course, in the text, the magic worms are also closely associated with dreams. In addition to symbolizing the highly developed Sky City, they also symbolize the peculiar desires and obsessions within a person's heart."
